Artificial versus Natural Marble for Your Countertops

Published on

If it is time for you to begin planning for a kitchen or bathroom renovation, you may be wondering what type of countertop you should choose. Homeowners across the nation struggle with deciding on the type of countertop material that will work best in their homes, not to mention the color, pattern, style, and finish. If you are leaning toward a marble countertop, or perhaps a material that gives the look and feel of marble, you have options for both natural and synthetic marble.

Many people want to know the difference between a natural stone countertop and a synthetic countertop. Both options are good ones, but you need to decide which material will work better for you, your family, your home, and lifestyle.

Granite and marble are two of the most popular examples of natural stones that many homeowners opt for because of their beauty, durability, and how they fit in with the decor of a kitchen or bathroom.

Natural marble stone is a type of material that is created organically in the earth’s crust. Artificial marble is a man-made stone that is manufactured in a factory instead of being mined from the earth. It is made up of about 95% natural stone, normally quartz, and about 5% resin which is all blended together and heated to form the solid surface that becomes a countertop.

Artificial Marble

There are two popular methods of creating artificial marble: cultured and engineered.

Cultured marble countertops are man-made by mixing resin and crushed stone in a mold that is then pressed together by using extremely high pressure to create a much harder and denser material that is not as porous as real marble but looks remarkably similar. While cultured marble looks beautiful, it does not tend to look as much like natural marble.

Engineered marble is also man-made, but it uses a larger proportion of recycled natural stone. The process includes using stone that is crushed, pressed, heated and bonded with a smaller amount of resin than the amount used in creating cultured marble. It mimics natural marble and is very affordable, although a little more expensive than the cultured version. It is eco-friendly and will make any kitchen or bathroom look amazing.

Natural Marble

Natural marble is a type of metamorphic rock that is created from limestone and calcite. It is an incredibly sturdy and durable material that you can leave raw or polish and is formed in an array of different varieties, such as black or brown marble, pink marble, or even a yellow marble color known as penteli. Marble tends to give off the err of class, status, and wealth so if that is the look you are going for in your kitchen or bathroom, marble is definitely an option you should consider.

Whether you decide to use natural marble or artificial marble in your kitchen or bathroom, it will add the beauty and functionality you are wanting to improve the look and feel of your home for years to come.
